The Do's and Don'ts of Sperm Testing: Ensuring Reliable Results

Jul 26, 2024

Is your partner getting a sperm test?

Don't let common mistakes compromise the accuracy of his results!
Here's what you need to know to ensure you get an accurate representation of his fertility:

🚫 Avoid These Mistakes:

  1. Abstaining for too long (or not long enough): The sweet spot is 3-5 days of abstinence before the test. Any longer, and sperm starts to die off!
  2. Dehydration: Proper hydration is key for accurate results. Make sure he drinks plenty of water in the days leading up to the test.
  3. Alcohol: Binge drinking the weekend before the test can wipe out sperm!
  4. Testing while sick: Illness can temporarily affect sperm quality. Reschedule if he's under the weather.

📍 Two Ways to Get Tested:

  1. On-site at a clinic: Sample provided and tested immediately.
  2. At-home sample: Dropped off at a pathology lab.

⏱️ Time Matters:

  • Ideally, sperm is tested within 10 minutes of collection. It's time sensitive. They start to die after an hour!
  • For drop-offs, consider:
    • Travel time from home to clinic
    • Sample temperature (keep it close to body temperature)
    • Time between drop-off and testing

💡 Remember: These factors can affect results, so keep them in mind when interpreting.

  • One bad result isn't a diagnosis - sperm quality can vary! Its like a snap shot in time. It doesn't have a direct link to how fertile a man is, but a test like this is an essential part of a fertility work up in a man. Lifestyle needs to considered as well.

👨‍⚕️ If Results Aren't Ideal:

  • Re-test in 4-6 weeks
  • Focus on improving his health for 3 months
