Frustrated by unpredictable ovulation? Discover the 5 major issues and how to rescue your ovulation.
Jun 07, 2024
It's a full time job tracking your cycle when you're trying to get pregnant.
If life was a Disney movie, you would ovulate at the same time each month.
In reality it varies each cycle by a few days.
Your cycle is unique.
If you've been working hard to understand its pattern, then you've got it sussed out to a predictable rhythm.
Then it changes 'urgh', frustration.
So when it does finally show up 7 days later it feels like your body is trolling you.
Sound familiar?
I can tell you that it happens to more women than you think.
AND your body isn’t trolling you.
Before you jump to blood tests or supplementing, try these changes.
You can start today.
Because there are things you are doing every day that impact how and when you ovulate.
1. It's easy to underestimate stress.
Your body responds to stress powerfully by doing everything it can to protect you.
And prioritises vital functions higher than making sure you ovulate on time.
It always comes back to survival.
On a deep level, your body will be wondering if its safe to conceive while you are in the ‘threat of all this stress’.
Some women ovulate later or not at all during times of stress.
I see it commonly in clinic.
Especially in situations like waiting to start an IVF cycle.
You'll need day 1 to arrive to begin IVF.
Of course, it's always late when you actually want your period.
Small changes can support your body's stress response.
To put your body at ease, send it messages saying "it's a safe time to conceive".
My tips:
- walking,
- massage,
- laughing,
- float tanks,
- meditation,
- journalling,
- exercise you love,
- eat breakfast before coffee.
2. Eat enough nutrients
4 out of 5 women I consult with are not eating to sustain a healthy menstrual cycle.
The new craze of intermittent fasting isn’t helping.
In general women are under eating calories and protein.
And not by a little bit.
Often by about 1000 calories.
Even if you are carrying extra weight, you might not be eating enough.
So your body is just trying to survive.
Ovulation is among the first functions to stop.
I’ve seen ovulation fall into a regular pattern within a matter of weeks.
Just by improving nutrition.
It's way easier and better than taking more supplements.
Start by eating at your maintenance calories.
You can calculate them by clicking here.

I promise that you don’t need to add bulk meat.
3. Over-exercising
I’m talking to you ladies who work out 6 days a week, sometimes twice a day.
Exercise is fantastic for your health.
But too much starts creating a stress response from the body.
And you know what that means by now.
Your body is working too hard to recover.
Especially if you aren’t eating loads of food.
Your body simply won’t have enough energy to ovulate each month.
Which is a problem when you are trying to conceive.
So opt for less intense exercise at a moderate frequency.
You can still weight train, and run.
But pair it with walking, yoga or pilates.
Be a bit more balanced.
4. Going to bed late?
Or dare I bring it up…
Going to bed early and doomscrolling until 12am?
Poor sleep is affecting your ovulation.
Sleep deprivation triggers high cortisol in the body.
A stress hormone.
Overall cortisol is not great for the body.
It affects testosterone and oestrogen playing a significant role of when your ovulation will arrive.
The solution?
Create a health sleep routine.
- Herbal tea
- Take magnesium
- Put your phone on charge in another room
- Opt for a book instead of looking at a screen
5. International flights
Been on a long flight?
Your cycle is going to get completely out of whack.
And you aren’t alone.
Your circadian rhythm (or internal clock) is closely linked with your menstrual cycle.
So really it's less about where you are going but more about your body’s response to jet lag.
The fatigue, sleep deprivation and altered sleeping patterns affect when you ovulate.
Don’t worry it's only temporary.
But keep it in mind when you are travelling.
You can probably see there is a pattern here.
Many habits create stress responses in the body.
If your ovulation is jumping all over the place and is driving you crazy, I recommend coming back to basics first.
How you eat, move and sleep has more influence than you realise.
